For this special Puma campaign the team at Sehsucht and myself took football into the world of gaming.
Each environment we designed had to reflect and enhance the player's skills perfectly. It should be a playground and stage for them to perform.
The selection of world-class athletes contained stars like Luis Suárez, Romelu Lukaku, Marco Reus, Sergio Agüero and Antoine Griezmann. My task was to design the arenas for the last two players.
has exceptional technique, speed and shooting skills, which make him the dribble master. We had no choice but to give him a challenging environment with obstacles, pickup-items and checkpoints. The mysterious cavelike ruin should remind you of adventure-games like Tomb Raider combined with fast-passed jump’n’run sidescrollers.
embodies the conviction and determination to become the best there is. We wanted to elevate him as the gifted hero - the chosen one touched by the heavens above. Why not exaggerate to the max? In the early concepts sketches we staged his performance in a dome-like arena with god rays illuminating him from above. Golden achievements circling him, only waiting to finally get collected.
01 - SKETCH
In order to make fast design decisions, we tested various directions in 2D first. Our goal was to figure out the general atmosphere and shape language according to references and the briefing provided by our director Hans.
02 - 3D MOCKUP
I continued to refine this mood by exploring different arena types. I was mocking up scenes in Blender to compare proportions, shapes and compositions. The following images are the result of those explorations.
03 - PAINTING
After Hans and I agreed on certain directions, I went further and started fleshing out more refined frames to create our dark and energetic world. Here I compare the 3D mockup-scene with the final concept painting of the Agüero chapter.
